Club History
Formed in the winter of 1994, the Varmint Militia (VM) was established
to prepare shooters for the 5th annual Top Dog Championship (to
be held in June of that year) in Nucla, CO. Our event was dubbed
the “Nucla Tune Up”. Unfortunately, the plague wiped
out the prairie devils and the Nucla event was cancelled! Our fortunes
turned as we had two dozen shooters show up for the Tune Up and
that group of shooters became the charter members of WHAC.
During those years, the term “militia” was controversial,
so we decided to take a more politically correct name. The Wildlife
Hunters Association of Colorado provided the perfect acronym, WHAC -
the sound of a bullet executing a trespassing prairie dog. Since
then, the VM still enjoys putting on the Shoot Out, our only live
target event open to the public and the 1998 Shoot Out brought
the number of trespassers (prairie devils) executed to over 10,000.
WHAC has been the figurehead of our club since 1996. WHAC dues
are designed to be reasonable for the average person. WHAC endeavors
to promote gun safety, proper hunt practices, youth and female shooters’
participation in the shooting sports. WHAC responds to the cry of ranchers
and farmers who are having a problem with prairie devils and coyotes. These
animals affect the economic survival of the landowners. As the VM, we are the
first and last line of defense against the prairie invaders. In those terms,
we are a true militia.
WHAC developed a shooting range to allow members to improve
their shooting skills. Target shoots occur with NRA instructors available to
assist youth and other members. Hand loading clinics are held to help those
members who wish to maximize the accuracy of their rifles or pistols. WHAC has
various committees who stand ready to assist members.
WHAC also
seeks to educate the non-shooting segment of society to the benefits
of the shooting sports and how these are useful tools in achieving
wildlife management goals. Our foremost goal is safe and fun shooting. Our
public image is maintained to show the non-shooting public how
shooters and hunters are safe contributors to our State and Country
WHAC is a family oriented club. All
members of your household will be WHAC members when you join. |
